I have been bringing my freshly turned 3 year old daughter to school these past weeks for the first time. She has entered her first year of kindergarten and will be at school 4 days a week, from 9-4:30. It was hard. It still is hard. I feel like I birthed her only months ago. Dear other Moms how do you feel about this!?!?
After over 3 years of carrying, playing, feeding, caring and constantly having a sidekick, my first born girl, I am alone most of the day and feeling the change hard. Now she is potty trained and off and gone. This September there have been a lot of new firsts for us both!
September is by far my favourite month. The skies are a deeper blue than usual, the mornings and evenings cool and damp, the afternoons warm and still full of summer. The harvest is bountiful, the years newest novels and films are released. It was her birthday last week, this week it is mine. And and in few days Autumn’s official start will be here.
This Autumn especially things have change so much for me, and my routine and my working habits. My daily brain activity has had to switch from 80% mom-ing and 20% adult-ing to 70% adult-ing and 30% mom-ing. Now I know why my Mom cried so hard and wouldn’t leave my college dorm room after dropping me off at age 18. This feels like the largest MOM milestone yet, even though I know it is just the beginning ! I read a quote today that said :
« Becoming a parent means meeting TIME »
Oh how this is so true. I have realized change is hitting hard this September because CHANGE means GROWTH and GROWTH is CHALLENGING. We are all creatures of habit and if there is a month where you experience change the most, it is in September. Stepping into a new rhythm, job, school, house, relationship, travel, family … is growth. And I find after a long hot summer, we grow the most.
I know these feelings will get better with TIME. That she will adapt to her new schedule and so will I. Until then, I will write and work and occassionally cry and while keeping myself busy until the school pick up at 4:30. Thank goodness for weekends. And for music to fill a silent house.
Thanks for reading, and feeling with me.
Take care everyone and happy September,
Andrea
